Frank, I would like to ask your opinion please as you seem very wise: what do you think about my habit of referring to small, inanimate, patently genderless objects as 'boys'? Like small books are boys to me. Is this sexist?

It seems weird to me to call books boys. Books are like cats in that they have souls.

Thank you, Frank. That seems like a very sensible answer.

If your book has no soul or thoughts, the only sensible word is “it.” This is my principle.

Does that mean boys don’t have souls? And books and cats do?

Books have souls, but cats don’t; that’s a good rule.

Okay, fair, but I should clarify that by calling cats “boy” I meant calling them “boy cats”
